Day 3 – Roncesvalles to Zubiri

We started the day with a decent breakfast and for once we could get yoghurt and cereals and fruits. The sky was clear, temp in low 20’s, a good day for walking. The relaxed start to the day was in direct contrast to the difficulty we faced later.

Leaving Roncesvalles only 790km to go

Into the witches forest

Legend has it that this is the spot where witches were burnt at the stake.

We had to cross a series of streams, there are very few bridges, usually just a series of stepping stones. No funniest home videos footage (unfortunately).

The day was a series of climbs up mountains ( yes plural), and down the other side. The temperature started to increase and the wind dropped, the sun had a sting in it and this made the climb up the mountains to Alto de Erro exhausting . There are no photos of the climb down into Zubiri, it was extremely steep and hazardous. About 3km over loose shale and rock. If we didn’t concentrate on each step there was a good chance of going A over T off the side of the mountain.

But we survived and celebrated in the usual fashion with a drink and people watching.
