Day 12 – Nájera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Another late-ish start, breakfast at 8am only because our accommodation didn’t get going early on a Sunday and we only had 21km to walk today.

Leaving SDdlC we walked passed the cathedral and then up and up and up.

Then it became one long stretch after another. Initially the cloud cover was a blessing but at the cost of increased humidity. It was like doing 3-4hrs on a cross trainer, in the sauna.

Take me home, country road, to the place I belong.

I started singing John Denver in my head.

But we got there in the end.

The cathedral contains a Rooster and a Chicken in a pen over the entrance. If the Rooster crows when you enter you can expect good fortune.

The Catholics are good at putting a scare into the believers.

We climbed onto the roof if the cathedral, yes we were allowed.

Our favourite saint, Saint Sebastian.

The reliquary contained a bone fragment from Saint Sebastian.
