Day 37 – Friol to Sobrado dos Monxes

Again started the day in the fog. But not before a very nice “vegetarian “ breakfast. The accommodation last night was very comfortable , and the host was a very nice lady. She did not speak any English but still managed to communicate well.

The walk out of town was much nicer than the walk in. Along a river, through a park, beside a swimming pool. Until I reached the city limits and it was Highway walking for the next 10-12km, and uphill again. But that should be the last major hill. The sun only came out for about an hour, so the temperature didn’t get above 26C, good walking weather.

Exiting the town

At about the half way mark the path was packed with pilgrims. It was like a traffic jam. At one stage the track narrowed to single file.

Single file

I saw a number of groups I had seen in previous days, including the French group, the German ladies, the 50 teenagers.

Pilgrims ahead

To top it off a farmer was herding his cows up the track in the opposite direction. I made sure I gave them plenty of space.

Cows coming

The town of Sobrado dos Monxes is mainly known for its active monastery, where about 16 monks still live. They take in pilgrims (I’m not staying there) , they provide beds in dormitories (males and females separate), meals on a donation basis, and pilgrims are encouraged to attend mass.

The cathedral has been stripped bare, and renovations are planned.

This town is geared towards pilgrims with a number of Albergues and restaurants offering pilgrim meals.

Callos- Chick pea soup with tripe and cows feet. A Galician delicacy.

Tonight I am staying in an Albergue with bunks . 28 in a room. I at least have a bottom bunk. They provide sheets and blankets but no towels. I managed to rent a towel from them for €1.
