Day 36 – Baamonde to Friol

Today was forecast to be hot, a continuation of the heat dome hitting Spain at the moment. It reached 34C here today, while other parts of Spain reached 45C.

The hostal did not offer any type of meals/food. The service station had a vending machine but that was locked up until 7am. I started before 7am as I wanted to beat the heat. Had fruit, biscuits and water for breakfast.

Up at Sunrise

I started with a few kms of road walking to get out of town, then crossed the river and started up into the hills. It was during this climb that I saw a very old church in the forest, it also had a water font, which suggests that this is one of the original pilgrim churches.

The path then levelled out. The next 10km was nice bush tracks and country lanes. Twice now I have seen deer cross the track ahead of me. But by the time I got my phone out of my pocket to take a photo they had gone. Today the deer was large and had antlers.

Nice surface for walking

Only saw 4 other pilgrims on the path today, but I was also much earlier than normal.

My destination today is off the Camino Norte and closer to the Camino Primitivo due to the shortage of beds in the next few towns. Tomorrow I walk back onto the Norte.

I had a 12km walk on bitumen country roads, which were not busy. However as the day started to heat up so did the roads and made for unpleasant walking.

No breaks today, the place at the halfway mark where I planned to take break was closed on Mondays. The next did not open until 11, I was too early. The next closed permanently.

Bright sunny day

After walking a couple of extra km around town looking for somewhere to have lunch.

I found a place for lunch, it wasn’t obvious but I saw a few workers heading in a door at a bar at 1pm so I followed. “Out the back” was a large dining area. The only option was menu del dia. As usual it was very large and good and only €14.

After this I checked into my accommodation, which from the outside looked very plain. Inside it was very nice. There are at least two other pilgrims staying here, as their very large packs were with mine when I arrived.

I ended up walking 24-27km today.
