Day 36 – Vilalba to Baamonde

Hotel put on a good breakfast, including eggs to order. I was on the road by 8am, and needed the early start as the forecast for today was 36c by 2pm. The only people at breakfast at 7:30 on a Sunday were other pilgrims. I ran into some of these people several times during the day.

The fog got heavier until about 10am, then the sun came out and it got hot very quickly.

I started to see groups of pilgrims, quite a few groups.

At one stage ahead of me I saw 40-50 pilgrims cross the road. It turned out to be a bus load of teenagers, I caught up with and passed them fairly quickly. They appeared to be supervised by 4 or 5 adults but it looked like they were herding cats. About 10km down the road a bus was waiting for them.

It was obvious some groups were on their first day. Clean clothes, matching t-shirts, perfectly coiffed hair.

Also this is why accommodation can be hard to get in this last part of the Camino.

Teenage pilgrims were not the only hazard, at one stage just ahead of me a farmer herded his cows out of the milking shed onto the path. At first they headed towards me.

But luckily went the other way

One of the things we often saw on other Caminos was stork nests. This time I saw one with a stork in it.

When I reached my destination (town)  for the day, both cafes were overflowing with pilgrims. Being a Sunday almost everything else was closed. After a little bit of searching in back streets I found a restaurant that was open. Despite not having a reservation they found me a nice table in the shade with a breeze.

My actual accommodation is about 1km out of town on the highway in a service station. It’s a bit rough, in stark contrast to last nights 4 star hotel.

One single bed, shower and toilet. But it’s clean and private.

It reached 36c today, by then I was inside, out of the sun. But still no aircon. That should be as hot as it gets this week.

On the way to my accommodation I past the 100km marker, this marks the beginning of the end. I will be in Santiago de Compostela by Friday.

Actually 99.904km marker

About 22km today
