Day 34 – Mondonedo to Abadin

Last nights hostel was located on a roundabout next to a 24hr service station and truck stop. So it was a bit noisy at times, still I managed to get some sleep.

Today started in a bit of a rush, I went downstairs for breakfast at 6:55am and was told breakfast finished at 7am so I had to be quick. My misunderstanding, at check in I thought they said breakfast was at 7am.

After breakfast I packed up and headed off, up into the hills. Problem #1, I still had the room key in my pocket. 1.5km up the hill I turned back, returned the key and 30 minutes later started again.

Clear sunny skies today

I opted for the longer, but more shady, path today. It was worth it, the day got hot but there was plenty of shade and cooler areas to rest. The walk was very hilly but constantly moving upwards as I had to climb a mountain to get to the upper area. About 650-700 metres climb. I will stay at this elevation for 3 days before climbing another 300 metres and then starting the descent towards  Santiago.

Shady walk

Despite the guide book indicating that there was a cafe in the town at the half way mark , it was as closed – permanently and looked like it had been for some time. Problem #2, frustrated that the cafe was closed, I walked right past a marker indicating I had to turn. About 100 metres up the road an old man told me to go back.  I thanked him and found the turn off.

I found a nice spot for a break today and had a tea party for one. No sign of Alice or the white rabbit. I think this is an art installation from a nearby artist colony, where you can stay for a donation,

It’s either Alice’s teapot or Aladdin’s magic lamp

Early in the day there was a sign saying the road was closed to cars beyond the cemetery. I found the cemetery and beyond it the road had partially collapsed down the side of the mountain. Ok for walkers and cyclists to get past but cars might have a problem.

After the ascent and coming over the top, and past the wind turbines I came to a large service station/truck stop/bus stop etc. it was a good chance to have a cold drink and rest in air conditioned comfort.

Yesterday these were on the horizon

Refreshed I continued on. I did not see another pilgrim walking today until nearly to my destination. Several bicigrinos (pilgrims on bicycles) went past me earlier in the day.

No shade for last 5km

My accommodation tonight is a combination Albergue/Hostal/Restuarant. I had the menu del dia for lunch and my room includes dinner and breakfast.

21-22km today
