Day 8 – Larrabetzu to Bilbao

Another hot one today, glad it’s not going to be a long one. It reached 33c and was very humid, we both suffered with this today.

Sunrise is about 6am and sunset about 9:15pm, sunny the entire time. Sorry but not sorry all you folks back home.

After we walked down the hill and away from last nights accommodation, which was a nice Casa Rural. But they didn’t do dinner (cena) so the owner helped us, and everyone else that was staying there, place an order for delivery.

The owner, who also lives there, did a lovely typical Spanish breakfast. We began the day walking alongside a road through a couple towns. This meant we could have a couple of coffee stops.

We struggled up hills through forests along very steep roads meant for 4WD vehicles.

On past Caminos I have suffered bad blisters on my feet, this time I have better boots, socks and hiking sandals. I also try and moderate how I walk up and down hills.

Up again

This is the “green” Camino and it spends most of the time in the hills, even when walking along a valley and through a town would be easier. It’s recognised as the most difficult, particularly in the first week. We have got through the first week and are in Bilbao for a couple of nights.

Also this is a chance to wash our clothes for first time in eight days. Pilgrims stink but we don’t care.

Passing the time waiting for washing
All clean now

We are about 150km into an 835km Camino, in eight days. All up we should take about 42 days.

Step by step we are getting there
