Day 7 – Gernika to Larrabezu and beyond

Not a great nights sleep, my feet kept reminding me that I treated them poorly.

Good early breakfast to start the day so we were able get going by 8am. It promised to be a hot day.

Church on the way out of town

Once again we started with a very steep exit out of town and into the hills.

Hard on the knees and feet

We walk along a combination of washed out tracks, muddy trails, country lanes and bitumen road.

At one stage the trail was blocked by 5 large pine trees that blown over in a storm. We had to climb over and clamber underneath than to get through.

Track blocked by fallen trees

The trail today was almost without any services, villages, etc.

One of the Albergues had a small stand that supplied soft drinks for a donation, another enterprising lady had set up a stall on her drive way selling homemade snacks like fruit skewers, stuffed dates, fresh fruit, cookies, etc. It was a very welcome sight.

Another house allowed pilgrims to fill their water bottles from a tap.

But no real chances to sit and rest.

We arrived into Larrabezu, walked into the first bar we found for a cold Aqua con gas (sparkling water).

Our accommodation is still a further 2km out of town, off the Camino and up into the hills. It’s a home stay run by a lady that does not speak any English.
