Day 5 – Matrika to Markina

We slept in! Knowing breakfast ( desayuno) was going to be 8:30am we did not set an alarm. So eventually we got going, being a few km out of town and already on the Camino other pilgrims were walking past so we just joined in.

Also it seemed all the other people staying were also on the Camino.

Once again it was up hill and down dale over and over again. But mainly up, we spent most of the day very high up in the mountains. The views are amazing as we moved inland away from the coast.

We slogged on through the hills, with long stretches of no services (toilets, bars, etc). Also variety of surfaces.

A therapeutic massage for the feet – NOT

The final descent into town was not kind on our knees or toes. But once we were on flat ground it felt good. Well, once we had a shower and a wine or two. Before hading to our accommodation we stopped at a small chapel to San Migel were a statue of Sam Migel is placed under huge rocks balancing on each other, We are staying at an Albergue that only accepts pilgrims. Which means we have a room but with shared facilities, dinner at a communal table and we all share.

Tonight’s table of ten included people from Austria, USA, Spain and Australia. There were also French, Dutch, German, Irish at another table. A league of nations in one small room.
