Day 4 – Zarautz to Matrika

The day started off dismally, it rained overnight and was still drizzling when we set off . We had a false start when we started to go up a very steep and slippery rocky path. There are two routes out of town, through the mountains or a safer route that goes around the road hugging the coastline for the first 4km. So we turned back and went around the coast.

Wet and steep (too dangerous for us)
Coastal route

It stopped raining but the damage had been done. The paths were wet and slippery and today the paths were the steepest we have ever encountered. At times our progress slowed to 1km/hour as we clambered up and down wet a slippery slopes.

A path ruined by mountain bikes making it impassable.

My Fitbit tells me we climbed the equivalent of  a 161 storey building which also means we had to go down 161 storeys.

We will have buns of steel when this over.

The sky’s cleared in the afternoon but everything remained wet. The views are amazing.

We did something a little different today and stopped at countryside restaurant for a 3 course Spanish lunch. This also contributed to the long day. We spent 9 hours walking today.

We finally found a church that was open, unlike the French Way, this Camino has lesser focus on religion and more on tourism.

Our accommodation tonight is a Casa Rural high in the hills overlooking the ocean.
