Day 16 – Day 1 of the Coastal Route

We started the coastal route from Porto to Santiago de Compostela today. The rain had cleared and the sun came out. Our start was a little late, and this meant walking in the heat of the day along the Atlantic coast. The surf was up.

We walked along the coast for most of the day, a lot of which was on wooden boardwalks. About 20+km, that also meant no shade.

We have noticed many more pilgrims around us now. Quite a few in new, clean clothes, with new boots and new packs. Porto is a more popular start point than Lisbon, as its shorter distance to Santiago and there is more pilgrim support in the form of cafes, Albergues, etc. We met one Italian guy walking to Fatima, via Santiago de Compostela and he started in Monaco. He had been walking for 3 months.

This chapel by the sea is claimed to be over 600 years old.

Tonight we are staying in a small family run hotel, they also run the restaurant next door and have their own winery. The owners are very nice and helpful. We sampled some of their wine with dinner, unlabelled bottles and very good. Dinner was excellent as well.
